A 3rd grade public school student asked me this question. My first thought was “tyranny”, but I needed to give this child a reasonable answer. I paraphrased a quote by Ron Paul,
“Freedom is not defined by safety. Freedom is defined by the ability of citizens to live without government interference. Government cannot create a world without risks, nor would we really wish to live in such a fictional place.”
A one world government by the State is not God’s design for society. Decentralization is His design as it benefits both the leaders and the citizens. God is the ruler of the State. (1 Timothy 6:15) An example for an orderly State comes from Moses in the Bible. Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, had recently arrived on the scene at Sinai. Jethro observed this: “The next day, Moses had the special job of judging the people. There were so many people that they had to stand before him all day.” (Exodus 18:13) “Jethro saw Moses judging the people. He asked, “Why are you doing this? Why are you the only judge? And why do people come to you all day?” (Exodus 18:14) But Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “This isn’t the right way to do this. It is too much work for you to do alone. You cannot do this job by yourself. It wears you out. And it makes the people tired too.”(Exodus 18:17-18) Jethro went on to advise Moses to choose leaders that loved God’s law, were trustworthy, and did not take bribes to lead groups of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens. It is all about locality and service to the people for everyone’s good. Societal order begins at the bottom with people who implement God’s law on a personal level. It builds into the family, then to the church, and subsequently to the city-state.
